Happily ever after | Gina and Kevin | Lisa Nikole Photography

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

Gina hired us without meeting us, ever. She saw our website and she loved us, she knew what she wanted. She said that when she called with some questions and I took the time to answer despite being with my family at a campfire, she knew she had the right person. I knew she did too :-)

Gina’s on twitter and during the time she hired us to her wedding day, we would exchange a few tweets! I knew it was important to her to make sure I included her special day on my feed and I did!

There was just this one problem… Kevin and his groomsmen were ugh… can I even say it…. Browns fans! I had to go to the stadium for a shoot, but Gina was not, so for her, I went along and of course we had a fun shoot! There was even a point when the guys were climbing up the gate, we were done when we heard over the intercom “For your own safety we ask that you not climb the gates, and… congratulations!” SO, how cool was that?

It was a beautiful day, awesome people and great families.

I’m always so honored to capture and preserve special moments for people!

Thanks so much!

Notice the thumbs down (you go Gina!!) :-)

Justin and Rebecca | Their Day | Lisa Nikole

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

Sometimes brides just find us, and other times they search us out, meet with us and decide what they want to do.

Justin and Rebecca had made up their minds and without even meeting both of us decided we were their team.

Surrounded in love and strong families the marriage of Justin and Rebecca made it’s way to the final minutes before they said I do. Emotion filled the air and things just moved along so smoothly.

Rebecca’s dad spent the night before pulling out pictures he’d carried of his baby girl in his wallet and then later sharing them with Justin and his groomsmen and then with his wife, who looked at a few, but knew it was a bit too much emotion for her to deal with at that very moment.

When Rebecca’s dad first saw her, his reaction was not only captured once or twice but three times as he stepped back to look at his beautiful daughter!

Justin was ready for the day, his brother helped with the final touches and even when pinning (we faked that part) the boutonniere’s on there was just a bit of humor of who would get stabbed.

It was a beautiful and peaceful wedding witnessed by tons of family and friends, and officiated by both Justin and Rebecca’s perspective pastors.

I’m always so blessed to be privileged to be able to capture a wedding and even more so when it’s as amazing as this day was.

Congrat’s to both Justin and Rebecca and their families.

Thank you allowing us, Lisa Nikole to be part of such an amazing day!

What do I do with my hands? | Lisa Nikole

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

I don’t know if I remember a time when I was on a shoot that I was not asked THAT question: “What do I do with my hands?”

As a photographer, it’s the last thing I’m thinking about. I look at background, foreground, lighting, shadows, positioning oh yes and then, those hands!

Until recently when I was photographed by my buddy James from JLS Studios did I even contemplate “where to do my hands go”?

I was in downtown Saint Louis at the amazing legal Graffiti Wall, getting set for a shot. There I was standing, leaning, moving left, move right, up, down and my hands…are just hanging there, what do I do with them? Ahhh, yes pockets, so I put them in my pockets and of course James tells me to take them out. So there they were hanging there. But, it did not matter, these were head shots and my hands could have been wrapped in a pretzel shape and no one would have seen.

So, to all my clients…I have to say I understand a bit more about the hands syndrome, but I have to tell you. My job is to make you look amazing, fabulous and off the wall hot! So, yes, I’m worried about where those hands are going, but even more so, I’m checking about 10 other things first.

It’s hard to tell what the photographer is going for, I see an image as we go. Every client is different and I never shoot different clients the same way. Everyone is unique and everyone has their own look. Not every one can pout, pull off sexy or just smile relaxed and look into the camera. My job is to get you to the point you are YOU when I photograph you!

This is why engagement sessions are so important with your wedding photographer, it’s a get to know you session for both the bride and groom and the photographer and at the end of that time together you both will have a better understanding of each other and when wedding day comes and I say something like “now melt into each other” you’ll know exactly what I mean!

So, just relax, take a deep breath and smile, look straight into my lens and let me make you the most awesome YOU you’ve ever seen!

Andrew and Sarah | Lisa Nikole

Monday, May 24th, 2010

I met with Sarah, Andrew and Sarah’s mom back in late December. What a beautiful family, even then I knew their connection and love for one another stood strong and firm.

They told me of a relatives wedding where the paid photographer did not show up the day of the wedding. It really made me sad to believe someone from our industry had done such a thing and I told them of how no matter what their day would be covered, that if IF some unforeseen incident occurred I always have photographers who will and can fill in for me.

Andrew and Sarah would be the first wedding of our 2010 wedding season and I could not wait to photograph it.

We met at Sarah’s parents home and the setting was amazing for pictures and even though the rain had prevented us from going into the yard, there was so much beauty surrounding the back porch we took a majority of our family pictures there.

We left Sarah’s and headed for the church to meet the guys, who were more then ready to get these pictures started, walking around the church and up a hill we took advantage of such beautiful scenery to do our guy shots! We even hid Andrew while Sarah arrived at the church.

There is something so magical about a country church and that’s is exactly what we felt at St. Paul’s Catholic church in St. Paul Missouri. The church was full of people who just wanted to support and show their love for Andrew and Sarah.

The sun came out to illuminate the beautiful stained glass windows as two people stood in front of a packed church to vow their love for one another.

We took Andrew and Sarah down to Old Saint Charles where we did some on location shooting and excused the wedding party to have some private time with the bride and groom. I love when a couple melts into each other and creates “moments” for us to photograph.

From there it was one more stop to a family tradition bar top wedding party picture at The Dog Prairie Saloon and then…back to the church for a rockin’ reception.

Every so often you meet a couple that illuminate. Andrew and Sarah light up the room, that inspire everyone around them and that enjoy life!

That’s Andrew and Sarah.

Thank you for allow us to share in your dream and now your vision of love!

Brandon and Melanie – Love and Emotion

Saturday, October 10th, 2009

This blog starts a new way we are going to blog our weddings, from now on, our stories will be shared with the images and not just a story from me and then a list of images. I hope you like the new way we are going to do this!

Melanie was so calm and cool, by far the calmest of brides I’d seen this year. When she thought something was on her dress, she looked down and said “Oh well, I can’t see it” and moved on!

Brandon, a bit nervous, but so anxious to see Melanie!

The running joke was that Melanie’s dress was in all reality a pant suit that she decided would be more comfortable to wear. Poor Brandon! So I told him Melanie looked beautiful and we left it at that!

Tears were flowing long before Melanie walked down the aisle. There was something so special about these two families. The connection between all of them through the two lives of Brandon and Melanie becoming one!
MB-0227-1

When Brandon saw Melanie, he melted, tears flowed from his face. Melanie walked down the aisle escorted by her Uncle and it seemed as if a moment in time had stopped, as Melanie reached the 2nd pew, Brandon came down to her! Melanie in tears, hugging her mother, her aunt and receiving a kiss from her Uncle and hugging her future mother in law.
MB-0285

Everyone not just in tears, but sobbing, not in sadness but as if an expression of uncontrollable joy.

This was not a sad occasion, but, the love and emotion of celebrating the passion of Melanie and Brandon.

This photographer had tears in her eyes as she photographed the emotion!
MB-0403

The families were amazing and we felt like family! That is what it’s all about for us. Not just “doing a job” but becoming friends sharing in their day and beyond!

The wedding party, was equally as amazing and SO MUCH FUN!!! They loved and cared for Melanie and Brandon not only by words but in actions!

When I heard the first dance was to Metallica I froze! Metallica, How are they ever going to pull that off? The emotion of the day led us to moment when the bride and groom took the floor. Melanie leaned into Brandon, Brandon took her hand and the music began to play.

Brandon told me I would like, no love the emotion of the song and from beginning to end the song originally scored by Metallica and re done by Apocalyptica “Nothing Else Matters” and executed by the deep passionate glances between Melanie and Brandon. It was, by far one of the most emotional songs I’ve heard and seen!

Thank you so much for allowing us to become part of your amazing special day. We with you the best of everything and as I told you, with families and friends like you have…. you’ll never be lacking or wanting!

Pro.. Procras.. Procrasti… Procrastination

Procrastination

Procrastination is described as a behavior, which is characterized by the deferment of actions or tasks to a later time.

I don’t procrastinate, not often, hardly at all, okay maybe….never! No, honest! I remember one time recently that I did NOT want to pay bills, I literally would have cleaned my kitchen floor with a toothbrush before paying the bills. It’s the first time I ever experienced procrastination.

I did not like the way it felt!

I don’t even procrastinate in my thoughts or deeds, I’m generally too fast on both and have been learning to sllloowww down the process just a bit. I get attached to fast, hurt too easy and just speak it how it is! But, then again, you know where I’m coming from, don’t you!

I’m the first one to jump in to offer help or start a campaign. First one to offer assistance and the first one to come to the aid of anyone in need. It’s who I am. It’s what I do. and…

I do it well!

I was asked once, how do you do it?

I really thought everyone was pretty much organized and procrastination was a minor affliction some people had. Until I started to really listen to people.

I think my anti procrastinationalism (yes I made up a new phrase) is really just a form of organization. See, I’m also SUPER organized. I call it anal organized but not as much as my friend Bethany who color codes her socks in her drawers in little cubicles for each pair (that is just insane Bethany!!!)

I have an order in which everything is done and a file for everything that I have. I have lists to complete and there is nothing more rewarding then scratching off an item on the list!

If you’re organized you really can’t procrastinate much, really!

There are immediate things I have to do right away: a phone call, an email, dinner, family time etc.

Then there are things that are planned: Editing, shopping, making dinner, laundry…etc.

Then there are goals: that is my amazing long term lists. I’ve got them for business and person. I’ve even got a list of blogging ideas!
My life is so busy that if I let one thing slip under the radar it’s a goner. I most likely would not get back to it and it would be a passed opportunity or a missed adventure.

You never know what a day will hold, so I make sure I am ready to handle whatever comes my way! I look expectantly to every day and I know each day holds so many opportunities, so I make sure I don’t miss any of them!

So, with open arms I great each new day with a mental and physical list. I answer all emails, tweets and Facebook. I reply to all the blogs that need my attention. I read all my newspapers and answer all my phone calls (my family will disagree with this)

The reason I answer all emails right away is three-fold. I personally love a quick response, so I love to make sure when people write to me, they get my attention and I will always respond right away if I am sitting here. If I don’t respond right away, your email is going to get lost in the pile, so I have to reply! My son stood over my computer and said “how do you keep your mailboxes so empty?” I thought that was strange so, I walked to his office and saw his….WHAT!!!! i’d die if I had his mailbox! I have generally no more then 3, or 8 emails pending in my mailboxes. First I look at it like it’s a list. Some I keep there to remind me of upcoming appointments, or trips. Others are there to decide if I want to participate. But there is never unopened mail in my any of my mailboxes. Only when I am traveling do these rules not apply!

My life online and off is pretty much run the same way. I love my lists! If something needs done, it’s done right away.

When I travel I make lists of things I want to accomplish before I go and while I am gone I make lists of things to complete when I get home.

But you asked….How do I do it? This is the best way to explain it.
I write list, I complete things right away and I just don’t procrastinate.

Oh and a by the way…I open my mail right away and sort it, and go through my magazines as soon as possible then toss or give away!

And then… I rest!

A question asked that had me thinking all week!

Friday, July 17th, 2009

I opened the door and peeked in, and there it was, a question that really sent me deep into thought and reflection! I went back a few years, then a few more. I thought about every picture I took. I thought about the people, places and things. I thought about my life and how privilaged and blessed I am to travel, do the things I get to do and meet the people I get to meet! I live an abundant life!

I was humbled as I looked back on my life, because parts of my life are not particularly happy ones, but as I looked back, I’m not even sure how I can compare the bad seconds to the hours upon hours of amazing things I’ve been allowed to experience.

So, what question set my soul on fire?

It comes from Jason and he asked me:
“In all your years of shooting…what photo are you most proud …of and why?

Jason, you really got me thinking and to be honest, your question really helped me put into perspective a lot in my life. so, Thank You!

So, what picture am I most proud of? Like a lot in my life I don’t have just a simple answer, If I had to pick one, well, I’d probably have to list more!

As I looked back, I started to think of certain pictures and I realized that those pictures that I thought of first were more because of the amazing people I was honored to meet and photograph! What made the picture an honor was the people, not so much my talent or ability, but the “life story” and people behind the picture.

I thought of all my brides and grooms and they all know they are special to me but, i wanted to dig deeper and this is what I found!

Erika: A beautiful woman who cried at her trash the dress session because her dress had already been worn and her marriage had ended, what was difficult turned into laughter and joy. I’ll be shooting Erika’s wedding in a couple of weeks! It’s been a joy to know her and watch her grow through these years!

Sam: I met Sam at my hotel in Westchester, NY. We just started to talk and when Sam wanted to tell me “his story” I felt such a strong connection to him and the wife he loved so much and lost a few years ago to cervical cancer. Sam caused me to blog and encourage women everywhere to pay the costs and get checked, had his wife done so, it would have been her hand he was holding that day, not mine!

Bert Randolph Sugar: On a train ride home from NYC to my hotel I sat across from a man with amazing stories. I thought no one could have done these things, met these people. For over an hour we talked and shared and laughed. He promised me at the end of the ride he would tell me who he was. Do you believe I had to google it? Stay in touch Bert! I miss our chats!

Eretz Yisrael: Israel, while I have many many pictures of Israel this one stood out, I just snapped it, I thought about this young man serving his country and who he may have been talking to. The smile on his face, the weapon in his hand. Ths photo also haunts me, because I tried to find him, I wanted a release to be able to use this picture. To this day, he remains a mystery!

Rev. Stanley W. Scott: I was asked to follow the end of Rev. Scotts life. This was particularly difficult because, he was a constant help in my life for 23 years. He baptized me, married me and prayed over my life and my families. He was a constant strong point in my life. I was honored to cover his life and his death. I chose this picture of him, because it’s how I remember him most! I hope to share more images of him with you in a month or so.
israel21

Ami Jerimiah Cohen: I covered the birth of Ami and when his birth became an urgent factor, I did the only thing I knew to do, I grabbed my camera and I stayed composed, and in a matter of seconds I heard his cries from the operating room! Ami is my grandson! He’s beyond amazing and special. A part of my heart beats in his!
al2-18

I’ve lived a wonderful life and it’s far from over! It’s been amazing and i can only look forward to the next person I meet and get to here “your life story” I’ve been privilaged to travel to different nations and states, to cover life from the beginning to the end!

Thank you everyone for allowing me the opportunity to share your Life Story, photographing you and allowing me to be special enough to be entrusted with it. Thank you! I am deeply humbled by this chance to look back!

Justin and Amanda – Married!

Saturday, June 27th, 2009

Last Saturday I had the pleasure of flying into Ohio to shoot the wedding of Justin and Amanda, a few months earlier I also had the pleasure of shooting their E-session.

This couple was so much fun and did everything we asked them to do. We had a blast and they were one of the first couples that got to experience our new “alley” that we found in Ohio.

One of the first things I realized about them is how much they cared for each other, concerned what each other thought and the respect. You know, when two people look into each others eyes and you can just feel the love that they have. It’s an amazing thing to witness.

One of the greatest things about being a wedding photographer is to be able to witness the bond and love between two people, it’s so strong and sometimes so overwhelming. I love being able to capture that emotion and give back an image that reminds them exactly what they felt at that moment in time.

Capturing Amanda and Justin’s love was and easy task, they were so comfortable with each other, it just makes my job fun!

Thank you both for allowing us to share in your very special day. We enjoyed all of it and wish you both the very best of everything life has to offer!

Rebecca and Robert – So In Love…

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

The look on Robert’s face said everything as he came down to sign the Ketubah with his soon to be wife. Becky’s smile shined as she saw her future husband for the first time during the signing ceremony. Both Robert and Becky were excited and so ready for this day to begin.

Rebecca and Robert did not know it, but when the Rabbi asked them to write why they loved each other individually and in private and give to him, that he would read these openly to everyone in attendance. Tears were flowing as what two people wrote of love, faith, trust, support and hope were shared. It was the best wedding vows I have heard.

There were blessings and prayers and sharing of wine and of course breaking of the glass, giving of the rings and “the Kiss”. It was a ceremony that even though performed on Saturday had already been confirmed in their hearts long ago.

During the reception all I heard was how these two have helped each other, and supported each other and at one point Robert spoke to me and his respect and love for his new wife were in his words, what he said was truly of a man of understanding and a man in love.

During a very moving part of the toasts, talking about how Becky and Rob both helped each other during certain parts of their lives, that they would have liked to welcome Rob into their family but, he’s already been such a part of it. Rob put his head down and Becky looked over and spoke softly “are you ok?” It’s these moments, and times that I get to observe the depth of a couples closeness and love towards each other.

It was such an honor to capture your day and get to know you and all your family. I know you’re sitting in some nice quiet spot and enjoying this time alone together. I wish you both the best and can’t wait to hear from you when you get back! Thank you again.

Kristine and Dan…..

Friday, May 8th, 2009

I’ve talked to Kristine on the phone a few times, we’d never met before but we were going to do her E-session. I was excited to meet them both. I love to meet couples in love, there’s something special about people who are so fixated on each other.

The world could just crumble, but as long as they have each other and their love nothing else mattered!

That’s what I saw in Kristine and Dan! It’s refreshing!

I shot this E-session last weekend at a favorite location! We had a blast and even though Dan had spent a day filled with kids, picnics and fun, he was so tired, so I promised him the best and quickest E session so he could get on to his next function.

They did great, and we had a lot of fun….and as you can see….so did they!
