Who says love is young? | Rudy and Peggy | Lisa Nikole

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

It’s been a few weeks, but I was called and asked to shoot a wedding of a friend for her mom.

It was a simple affair, small family wedding.  Do I have that date open? I did!

I’d not met the bride or the groom before and when I arrived at the church, I had to ask.. “so, where’s the bride” and I was directed to where she was getting ready!

When I opened the door, introduced myself and started to do what I do best…cover their special day.  I was not sure what to expect, but I assure you, it was not what I experienced!

The couple of course were older, and Peggy (bride) was surrounded by her children, sisters and family.  Her nephew would marry them, her grandson created a song that night just for them and sang it.

Rudy (groom)  was “ready to get this going”.  Rudy was distinguished and had a great sense of humor, and he could not wait, to see his bride!  Peggy was beautiful, poised and very ready to walk down that aisle and be with the man she loved.

The music started Rudy took his place and Peggy made her way down the aisle, it was really beautiful to watch two people so in love, so in love and so caring of one another.  The look in their eyes towards each other said it all.  Nerves did not play a role in this wedding, they had been planning this and they were so ready to spend the rest of their years together.

The ceremony was relaxed and very personal with lots of smiles and also a seriousness that a marriage ceremony should bring.  It was refreshing to know, that at any age, love can be found, love can be had and love can be shared!

It was refreshing to witness and beautiful also!  I’m not going to tell you how old Peggy and Rudy are, but I will tell you this… they look AMAZING for their age!

I always say it’s such an honor to be trusted with something so special as the union between a man and a woman, to share in the secrets of the backroom as they get ready, to peak into their lives and to be able to capture those moments and share them with you and with them.

But to Peggy and Rudy, thank you for allowing me to capture your day, your elegance and your love is something I am going to remember for a long time.  I was truly touched by your union and marriage!

Thank you!

Rudy waiting to see his bride!

Beautiful couple and amazing families.  Thank you again!  Enjoy your life together Peggy and Rudy and enjoy many many anniversaries together!

New Model | Candace G | Lisa Nikole

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

I don’t normally start out with an image, but candace was different, she deserves a different blog posting.

Candace, is different, I’d have to say she’s an “old soul” I am not in favor of that term, but it does fit her.

On our way down to the city, Candace shared with me some really amazing things she keeps on her Iphone… how about a picture of Marilyn Monroe without makeup? Audrey Hepburn and her favorite movie…”Meet Me In Saint Louis”! I’ve promised Candace I’d follow her to Austin, Texas and we would do an Audrey Hepburn shoot together and when we do, I’ll be sure to post it. Till then… here is some of the fun Candace and I had in downtown STL.

Candace was waiting for this blog to see my favorite pics of her… so hopefully she’s happy in knowing them now :-)

Happily ever after | Gina and Kevin | Lisa Nikole Photography

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

Gina hired us without meeting us, ever. She saw our website and she loved us, she knew what she wanted. She said that when she called with some questions and I took the time to answer despite being with my family at a campfire, she knew she had the right person. I knew she did too :-)

Gina’s on twitter and during the time she hired us to her wedding day, we would exchange a few tweets! I knew it was important to her to make sure I included her special day on my feed and I did!

There was just this one problem… Kevin and his groomsmen were ugh… can I even say it…. Browns fans! I had to go to the stadium for a shoot, but Gina was not, so for her, I went along and of course we had a fun shoot! There was even a point when the guys were climbing up the gate, we were done when we heard over the intercom “For your own safety we ask that you not climb the gates, and… congratulations!” SO, how cool was that?

It was a beautiful day, awesome people and great families.

I’m always so honored to capture and preserve special moments for people!

Thanks so much!

Notice the thumbs down (you go Gina!!) :-)

Boys | Dreams | Airplanes

Friday, August 20th, 2010

Ami had been there before, his pawpaw had taken him and all he wanted to do was go see the airplanes. I just wanted to see what he saw, so finally I had my chance.

I’d love to tell you all where this place is, but I really don’t want you to know :-) It’s so quiet and peaceful there and the day we went the wind was blowing and if you closed your eyes, it was like you were in a place far far away.

I knew I did not have a lot of time, Ami’s attention span is 4.6 seconds and after a few planes he was ready to bolt and get something to eat. Next time, I’m bringing a blanket and food and I plan on staying a while, laying back and just relaxing. When’s the last time you relaxed like that?

I remember the excitement Ami got seeing those plans fly over, okay, and I got excited also! It’s pretty amazing to watch them take off and fly over head. Jim says it’s better when they are landing, I’ll have to find that day and go check it out again.

When Ami says WOW, it’s a big deal or the word HUGE! They are HUUUGGGGEEEE, WOOOOWWWW! That’s how big his dreams are too, right now, at almost three, there is nothing Ami can’t do. HE can fly, he can shoot you with a spoon and he can do whatever he wants (until we stop him) He’s not inhibited by fear and he knows, if he cries for help, someone is going to help him. He’s superman, batman, spiderman and buzz lightyear all rolled up in one. He plays hard and dreams big!

Aren’t we all supposed to be like that? Don’t we have someone we know that will save us from our failures? Something happens when we grow up, fear is instilled, limitations are set and we live out our lives thinking “we can’t do that”. Why can’t we? Have you ever asked yourself why you can’t do that dream, that thought, that vision you have? I think when you ask yourself, your answer will be… why not?

What is your dream? Your passion? Your desire? Go for it, don’t stop till you’ve achieved it and don’t let anything stand in your way. I know a photographer who worked just long enough to get that piece of equipment he needed for a job. I know people who work midnights to have their desire to do what they do in the day time until they can do their dream with out that midnight job. I know people who push the buttons, extend the limits and pursue their dream, and… they achieve it.

I’m not saying quit your day job, but use your day job to achieve your dreams, put a picture up and set a goal and go for it and remove any one or any thing that is negative to that fact. Get around the strong, the achievers and the dreamers.

I don’t care how old or how young… go for your dream and don’t stop till you get it!

I’m not sure about you, but those are the people I want to be around. The people who live to dream and push past stereotypes and hinderances and GO FOR IT!

I’d like to hear your dreams, hopes and desires. I’m serious! Your feedback motivates me and as much as I’m told I inspire you. Leave me some feedback and tell me your passion and how you plan to live your dream!

2nd Cousins | Mail call | Lisa Nikole

Monday, August 16th, 2010

It had been years and I’m not talking about two or three. I had not seen Michael since my pre-teens. His Grandmother was my Great Aunt and I got to spend a few weeks each summer with my Great Aunt Nancy.

Besides my Grandmother, Aunt Nancy was the coolest relative I had. She taught me how to play cards, make popcorn balls and this amazing rose mint mold candy. IF anyone knows anything about these awesome creme cheese candy molds, let me know… it’s important! Aunt Nancy lived way up on a hill in Neshannock Township, Pa

I remember we had to go visit Aunt Ruth and I had to be super good and super quiet there. I think and I’m pretty sure Aunt Ruth did not like me. I was very energetic and to get me to sit for any length of time was a task that only Aunt Nancy could handle!

We’d take long walks down the hill and into town and pick up groceries and yes.. folks.. I enjoyed penny candy! The real stuff, not this junk you see now!

Then, every so often when I came to visit, Michael and his family would come to visit. I can’t remember too much of the visiting but I am very sure we had a fun time and got into trouble. Isn’t that what cousins do? I also remember having the biggest crush on his older brother Sam.

I can’t remember the year, but I remember Aunt Nancy got sick and soon she was in a nursing home. I had grown up, but I still remember my Aunt Nancy and talking with her always made my problems seem small. She just had a way to talk you through anythng. I had my daughter by then and I wanted Aunt Nancy to meet her. My family had told me that she probably would not remember me, but I wanted to go anyways.

I remember seeing her and she starred at me, it was a dark blank stare and I awkwardly told her who I was and introduced her to my daughter. I saw a few photo albums on her nightstand and it made me smile. I looked through them and I did find a picture of me. It was nice to be remembered. Looking back at Aunt Nancy, I was sure, Aunt Nancy was no where to be found.

Being the photographer that I am, I brought my camera and I took a picture of my daughter and my Great Aunt.

Later after the picture was developed (yes folks…the film days) I saw something that shook me. I saw the look in my Aunt’s eyes and I knew I KNEW she was still in there, somewhere behind the wall that separates you from them, and in her eyes she said “Please don’t, Please don’t take a picture of me”. You’d have to know me pretty well to understand that this is exactly what I saw and that picture haunted me for a long time. I eventually (long story short) sent it to another relative that I felt needed it more then me. I really would love to have that picture back.

That was the last time I saw my Aunt Nancy alive. I’m glad she did not suffer much and I was so blessed to have an awesome aunt that really did love me. I learned a lot those summers!

Recently on FB I hooked up with my cousin Michael and even more recent I got to talk to him on the phone and catch up with everyone. His mom had found some items that she felt I would love to see and I was so excited to recieve it and I had to share it with you! There was some personal items about my father, and a few pictures I’d seen before. But there it was.. not the picture I lost but a picture of my Aunt and you can even see her personality as she hides behind the shoulder of someone.

It was so good to see her again and to see her in a way I’d always remembered her. Thanks to FB and family and the great hookups going on all over the web.

Oh yea and for some fun…here are some of the pictures sent to me.

Me! I know I know “awwwwww”

I think they call these the awkward years:

and yes this is a senior picture:

My father:

My Grandma:

and last..some people and my Aunt Nancy, this picture made my day.

Thank you Michael and your mom for thinking of me. I appreciate you all!

My Gardner | Lisa Nikole

Just a short post about my new gardner…he’s cute and very very handsome… I have to really keep my eye on him when he’s out there working :-)

So I thought I’d take my camera and take a few pictures of him for you all to see what I get to see every day he works for me.

So, here he is….

Lisa Nikole’s Gardner.. workin’ it

Sometimes he gets a little shy…

So, really… WHAT were you thinking?

What do I do with my hands? | Lisa Nikole

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

I don’t know if I remember a time when I was on a shoot that I was not asked THAT question: “What do I do with my hands?”

As a photographer, it’s the last thing I’m thinking about. I look at background, foreground, lighting, shadows, positioning oh yes and then, those hands!

Until recently when I was photographed by my buddy James from JLS Studios did I even contemplate “where to do my hands go”?

I was in downtown Saint Louis at the amazing legal Graffiti Wall, getting set for a shot. There I was standing, leaning, moving left, move right, up, down and my hands…are just hanging there, what do I do with them? Ahhh, yes pockets, so I put them in my pockets and of course James tells me to take them out. So there they were hanging there. But, it did not matter, these were head shots and my hands could have been wrapped in a pretzel shape and no one would have seen.

So, to all my clients…I have to say I understand a bit more about the hands syndrome, but I have to tell you. My job is to make you look amazing, fabulous and off the wall hot! So, yes, I’m worried about where those hands are going, but even more so, I’m checking about 10 other things first.

It’s hard to tell what the photographer is going for, I see an image as we go. Every client is different and I never shoot different clients the same way. Everyone is unique and everyone has their own look. Not every one can pout, pull off sexy or just smile relaxed and look into the camera. My job is to get you to the point you are YOU when I photograph you!

This is why engagement sessions are so important with your wedding photographer, it’s a get to know you session for both the bride and groom and the photographer and at the end of that time together you both will have a better understanding of each other and when wedding day comes and I say something like “now melt into each other” you’ll know exactly what I mean!

So, just relax, take a deep breath and smile, look straight into my lens and let me make you the most awesome YOU you’ve ever seen!

Midwest Movement 3 | Lisa Nikole | Moving on

Saturday, May 15th, 2010

Pleasant Hills Arts Center, Pastor Moser:

We pulled into the church parking lot and the movement got out and it was a time to unwind. Football, skateboarding and just enjoying the beautiful grounds and a wonderful day! Our mission, Pleasant Hill Arts Center and a fundraiser for Haiti.

Great performances all around that night and of course the movement performed in excellence and nothing stopped them from giving their all and sharing what they came to share!

Our next stop was Kalahari but I’ll leave that for the last blog post about our event.

Last stop: Danville Ill and the New Life Christian Church
Amazing church with a youth group called oneeighty (one-eighty). The Movement performed their best as this was their last performance together as a team. Some will move on and some will stay for another year. What ever they choose we know God will bless their every steps and they were enriched by being a part of the Midwest Movement and we will be enriched by knowing them.. I know I am!

Midwest Movement 2 | Lisa Nikole | The Movement

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

Part two!!!

The next place we visited was Bridgeton, Iowa where we visited First Assembly of God, The Great River Christian School and one of the movements own Joy’s home!

Performing an amazing event of Drama’s, Human Videos, Song and Ministry the team was confronted with low ceilings and small smiling faces that allowed them to close the gaps and journey into the realm of being instant in season and out. They rocked and as we left..the small voice from inside the fence at the Great River School screaming: “I love you, you’re awesome” if just that one little voice was affected by what he saw and heard that day, then… it was all worth it. Every moment! Because he’ll never forget the group that showed up and performed for him that day!

After that we we drove to team member Joy’s home, where her family prepared lunch for everyone and her father gave us ample amounts of pepperidge farms products to eat along the way. Serious, have you tried their new products? YUMMY! thanks so much to Joy’s family for their hospitality and love shown to us!

Next stop: Pleasant Hills Arts Center, Pleasant Hills, Missouri and New Life Christian Church in Danville, Ill.

Midwest Movement | Lisa Nikole

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

I was once again asked to drive for the Midwest movement (MWM) and I can’t tell you what an honor it is to be with these people. Top notch, class and a whole bunch of energy rolled into one!

Let me introduce you to them:

Jeremy – funny man and all around tech guy
Tank – dancer, heart and a ton of energy
Marquis – thoughtful, will do anything he’s asked and really tall
Nathan – strong, helpful and mechanically inclined
Justin – musician, inquisitive, concerned and a great singer
Jamison – musician, thinker, hard working
Christina – investigative, inquisitive, funny, and lots of questions!!
Mackenzie- hard working, strong, sensible
Millie – lovable, caring, smart, artist and loves to hug
Joy – kind, caring, and growing

They have all made immeasurable impact in my life from our first meetings till now. I’m blessed to know you all!

Yours truly got to drive a HUGE 7 passenger van, and I’ll be honest, I was not comfortable, but I have to admit I rocked it! It was not as bad as I thought and with that awesome backup navigation beepy thing, I was home free. I did however follow the wrong van for a period of time and I think I would have followed them right to their home if my mistake was not revealed to me. Hey, in my defense, a white van is a white van right? :-)

I took notes this trip about where we were and what we did. Basically what the movement does is travel for 9 days and it’s a stretching on everyone involved, but it’s all good. They may not think so, but they are an extraordinary! I’ve said it to them and I’ll tell you “I know exceptional people who can’t get along together for 12 hours much less then 9 days” This is rare, yet so common for them! It’s an honor to be around them!

So this tour we traveled to Moberly Missouri, Bridgeton, Iowa, Pleasant Hill, Mo., and Danville Ill. with a fun stop in Wisc. for a team retreat at Kalahari Resorts!

I got to experience several different ministries and meet a TON of new people and that is one of my most favorite things to do!

Let’s start with Moberly Missouri, Family Life Fellowship Destiny Center, Pastor Shawn and over 200 young people filling this 2nd story brownstone in downtown Moberly. This is quite a place for young people to hang out, skate park on the lower level, cafe, pool table, basketball and then the stage and ministry center.

Here’s a bit of video from our travels and a few of the team ministering…

Next blog post: MWM 2! Why they do it, what they did and Fun times at Kalahari!
