Sometimes you just have to go with it | Mistakes along the way | Lisa Nikole, Saint Louis Photographer

I wanted to pen this blog real fast but because of an article I just read in Newsweek, it fit.

Manolo Blahnik – do you know who he is? If not, click HERE

If you do know, then you will know why I know not only who he is but I love what he does!

Either way.. his article in Newsweek talks about his first runway show, he was called to design a new line of shoes, he wanted something amazing so he designed a beautiful heel… so the article goes, but he did not realize that for the heel to stand the pressure put on it, it needed a steel support, a support he left out.

When the models hit the runway, the heels were giving and bending, the models were moving awkwardly and strangely, and he knew.. “it was the end of his career” At the end of the show he was surrounded by people saying the shoes were sexy, amazing and what a great collection.

Amazing!

So what does this have to do with me?

Yesterday I got to shoot an amazing model, she’s not just any model she’s been in magazines, and flown around the country. She had a certain image we had to create for a commercial line.

I’d love to give you details but, I have to wait till I get the release to show you.

We wanted to shoot outside, we had a deadline and we had no other time to shoot it. Yesterday the wind was blowing pretty hard, we found a secure location but my duct tape would not hold onto the wall, the paper was ripping and falling. So thankful we had people to hold the paper and purses make great paperweights.

Now to get the model onto the paper, the paper is creasing, the wind is blowing her hair and I’m thinking.. What the crap are we doing.. How horrible a shoot is this, How great do we look now.

When I uploaded the images..none of it mattered. the background was hardly noticable, her hair was beautiful and we did it.

Now we are picking out images that will grace Las Vegas in a month and seen all over the nation.

I could easily have given up… but I thought.. What else can we do but try..

if you like this you can buy me a pair of these shoes to show how much you love me :-)

A Test and an Example | WHY Would You Do That | Lisa Nikole Saint Louis Photographers

I generally don’t take your word for it. I have to find out myself.

A few years ago I took about 5 different wedding images and traveled to Sam’s Club, Wal Greens, CVS and Wal-Mart, I also took those same images and had them developed at my professional service that does all of the work for Lisa Nikole Photography.

What happened surprised me, not because I did not expect much difference, I did, but what I did not expect was the amount of difference between my images from each of the consumer locations.

One of the places developed my purples as grey, another place blew out the reds to a hideous color and yet another made my images practically so off color they did not look like the original.

I show these images to my couples to show them what can happen when they don’t use a professional company. If you want the details of this, please ask and I will tell you how these companies fail in color correction and more.

So, I wanted to check one more thing out..

I got a coupon in the mail for a free 16×20 from Wal-Mart. I had to order online, so I grabbed an image, uploaded and ordered. The process was basically easy. I got a notice later that day my image was ready for pick up (WOW, huh)

Problem was, my image was not at the store I designated. I called the store later that day to see if my image showed up. I talked with a woman who acted like I was wasting her time, she wanted to look up the order by my name and kept telling me the order was not there. I kept saying, “I have the order number, can we try that.” She responds in a short tone.. I’ll try that in a bit, you’re order is not here. Again, i ask.. “then why do I have an order number with your store address telling me my order is ready for pick up?”

She responds with “You want to talk to a manager or something?” I reply “NO, I want you to check the order number.”

Finally with some convincing…she takes the order number, places me on hold and in a few minutes she comes back and says: “umm, seems your order was here, well, it says it was here, I’m not sure where it went.” “I’ll print you another one and let you know when it is ready…”

I’m still waiting on that reply.

As a professional photographer I know a lot of new photographers and a lot of customers who get their images on disc use Wal-Mart as a developer. I’ve honestly never liked their developing or the calibrations on their machines but now I have a new issue.

WHERE DID THAT IMAGE GO? WHO HAS IT AND WHAT ARE THEY DOING WITH IT?

How can I entrust an image of a client or that of a loved one to a company that can’t keep track or worse yet has employees that could care less what happens to my image.

If you are a person aspiring to be a professional I stress you use only professional developing and be very careful that your images do not end up in someone else’s hands or Facebook or worse then that.

If you hand your client a disk or digital negatives…tell them my story. Or better yet, create your own. I’m sure it’s not just a once in a while occurrence.. whose behind that desk? It’s not a person dedicated to photography or the advancement of yours. It could be the person from shoes taking over while the other part time employee is on break.

Test the waters. Create your own facts and then let people know…
Educate the ones around you… make a difference!

Someone took at bite out of the Apple | Steve Jobs | Lisa Nikole Photography

Thursday, October 6th, 2011

I was writing another blog post last night, when the news passed by my twitter feed.

RIP STEVE JOBS

I think we all knew it was coming, especially if you saw the last picture of Steve posted on TMZ right after he resigned.

I was asked if I thought Steve held on for the latest Apple announcement, I’d like to think that, I’ve heard of things like that, but I’ve also seen a person near death, and they no longer seem to care about what they did or what they are, they care about family and making sure everyone is going to be okay.. then they go.

Steve Jobs was an amazing man, from his first apple computer, to his being fired from Apple (remember that) to his return to the top of the Apple chain.

I know that when Steve Jobs took the stage, people listened and he knew exactly how to present products.

I posted on Twitter that the Iphone4S should be re-named for Steve.. then this was posted as a response IPhone4S(teve) and then another person posted, maybe it already was. Maybe it was.

I changed my avatar on FB today. I’m not a big fan of doing that, but Steve Jobs was a genius whether you like Mac or not. What he did, what he created grew and grew and grew.

My new avatar

a bite out of the apple and a spot that will be missed forever.

Steve Jobs, you were amazing and you left us a legacy and many more people to carry on your dream and visions.

We are only better because of it.

You will be missed….
